How to Build a Mattress Stand
Mattresses are very expensive, and not everyone has the
money to buy both the mattress, the stand, and the box spring. Aside from the
price, there are other concerns as well. Some people need a shorter bed in
order to get in and out of bed easily. If you have either of these concerns,
then you need to know how to build a mattress stand.
It is rare that you would want to be sleeping all the way on
the floor, as it is not a particularly easy way to get up in the morning, and
it can be especially difficult for people who have back and leg pain. There
are sanitary concerns as well. By not supporting your mattress in the air, you
could be allowing insects and other household bugs to make a home inside the
plushy fibers.
Learning how to build a mattress stand is pretty simple, but
it needs to take a different form depending on whether or not you have a box
spring. With a box spring, you can create a much lighter stand, as the box
spring has the support to hold up the mattress. If you do not have a box
spring, you will have to build a more heavy-duty mattress stand, something with
supports going horizontally and vertically across the bed. Without this, the
mattress will sag in the middle, and it could damage the integrity of the the
stand as well as the mattress.
Because the mattress is so heavy, you must build your
mattress stand to withstand the pressure. For a bed without a box spring, you
should support the bed with full length planks running the length of the bed, with
an occasional crossing bar to help support the center of the bed. The longer
your supports, the more weight your stand can hold, but keep in mind that the
center of the mattress stand will need some additional support.
If you have a box spring, you do need to worry as much about
support. The box spring will provide that for the mattress, so you don't even
need to know how to build a mattress stand that is extra strong. For examples
of what you can do with a box spring support, take a look at some of the
mattress stands at the store. They do not need to be particularly large or
hefty, since the entire purpose of these stands is to raise the mattress off
the floor so that it is easier to get in and out of.
Some people build more elaborate mattress stands with
drawers and storage areas built in underneath. If you have the carpentry
skills to know how to build a mattress stand like this, it can be a great way
to dress up the otherwise bland support systems. There are many good carpentry
books which will show you some designs and give some more tips on how to build
a mattress stand, many of which will give exact blueprints for some very nice
looking products.
