How to Make a Futon Mattress Into a Regular Mattress, and
How to Move it Back!
Futons are a confusing piece of furniture for most people.
They often come with very poorly written instructions on changing the futon
from bed-mode into couch-mode and back, leaving most people in the dark about
how to make a futon mattress into a regular mattress. Regardless of the
instructions given, there are a variety of tips and techniques which you can
use to make a futon mattress fold into the proper shape.
If you know how to make a futon mattress go from one setting
to another, chances are you simply need to reverse the process in order to make
the mattress move back into the opposite position…or so you would think.
Unfortunately, most futon mattresses are difficult to maneuver, and many times
the handles and switches break after only a few uses.
Learning how to make a futon mattress conform to the shape
you need it in the is the first step. It is very easy to make a futon mattress
lay flat, but it is often the case that new mattresses are difficult to fold
into the sofa or chair shape. You may wish to try coaxing your mattress into
the proper shape before setting it on the futon structure itself. The pressure
of the mattress attempting to push itself flat can do some harm to the futon
base. New futon mattresses should be removed from the structure and replaced
after the switch between positions, at least for the first month or two,
because of the difficulty. Fortunately, most futon mattresses are lightweight and
small enough to be handled easily.
The second tip for working with a futon is to mark the
levers you must pull in order to change the position of the futon. In the
majority of cases, these levers will be underneath the sitting portion of the
bed typically near the head and foot of the bed. Because there are often a lot
of movable pieces to a futon, many people find it helpful to have these pieces
marked out so that they can switch the bed without doing any harm to the bed
itself. By marking the levers with a piece of duct tape, it becomes very easy
to locate the handles and change the bed without having to look for the
instruction manual. In general, the tape will not be seen by your visitors, as
it will usually be well hidden and near to the floor.
If you follow these two simple tips, then you can figure out
how to make a futon mattress move the way you need it with minimal effort. Every
futon is different, however, so it is important to consult the manual first
before making any moves. If you pull too hard on a lever that is not really a
lever, you could break the bed and have to have the futon replaced. While many
will come with a warrantee against this kind of damage, it is a tremendous
hassle to get these beds replaced.
