Adorning Your Mattress – How to Buy Bed Sheets and Coverings
Nobody sleeps on just a mattress. Yet, knowing how to buy
sheets and coverings is a complete mystery to many people, and because there
are so many options, some people are overwhelmed when visiting the store.
One of the best ways to figure out what to buy for your
mattress is to shop online. Many online mattress stores will sell the sheets
and bed coverings at a very discounted rate. They will even be able to show
you the exact measurements of your mattress, as they are not all created
exactly equally (the size of mattress, much like the size of clothing, can vary
company to company). It is impossible to know how to buy mattress sheets that
will fit tightly everytime, but you can certainly get a better fit with the
exact measurements from a specialty online store.
Another tip for buying bedroom accessories is to look at
thread count (TC). This is a rough measure of how many individual threads are
included per square inch. The more threads, the greater the quality of the
sheets, and the more durable they will be over the long term. You will also
find that sheets with higher thread count are more resistant to shrinkage, and
tend to be smoother on the skin. You should be aware, however, that due to the
methods of creating the sheets, the thread count can often be a misnomer.
While 800TC sheets do exist, this is likely false advertising allowed because
of a confusion by the FTC. 500TC is the approximate maximum which can be spun
into a single inch, and the majority of the sheets advertising this are using
the same tactics.
When buying sheets, you would like to see the term “combed
cotton”. This essentially means that the threads used to create your sheets
have been mechanically cleaned before spinning, which removes small particles
and shorter strands. This leads to a softer feel in the sheet, and often gives
the sheet more durability and a resistance to wrinkling.
Be prepared to pay for quality bed sheets. The larger the
thread count, the more you will be paying, but it is often important not to
skimp when it comes to bed sheets. Because thread count refers not only to the
smoothness of the mattress, but also to the durability of the fabric, you get
more durability, and more comfort out of the higher quality sheets. It is
almost always worth the money to get higher thread count sheets. In general,
there is not much difference between designer sheets made by a large
corporation and comparable thread count sheets made from a smaller
organization. You can purchase many good sheets online from a specialty
website, and they come in a variety of sizes and colors.
